The reactions of neutral alkane molecules with vinyl alcohol radical cations
and of alkene radical cations with neutral alcohol molecules proceed via
hydrogen atom transfer to give intermediate oxonium ion/alkyl radical
pairs, which can combine to form alkohol molecular ions. This gas-phase
synthesis demonstrates that the simple cleavage of molecular ions can
be a reversible process.
